Six-Vehicle West Phoenix Crash Kills One

A six-vehicle crash that occurred near 59th Avenue and Thomas Road in West Phoenix on Thursday morning has left one person dead and several other people injured.

According to police, witnesses indicate that a tow truck driver traveling northbound ran a red light and collided with a Mitsubishi and a Toyota Prius at approximately 4:30 a.m.

Eyewitnesses say that the Mitsubishi was pushed sideways through the intersection and was then struck by a westbound Ford F-150 pickup truck. The tow truck continued to push the smaller vehicle before it burst into flames before colliding with a Nissan Maxima that was stopped and waiting in a left turn lane.

The tow truck continued its northbound trajectory in the southbound lanes and collided with a Kia minivan.

Eyewitness and Good Samaritan Byron Wheeler had been waiting at a nearby bus stop when he heard the crash. Wheeler and another man attempted to free the man trapped inside the burning car. They were unsuccessful in their attempts and the man died before first responders arrived on the scene of the multi-car accident.

The driver of the pickup truck had debris stuck in his head and was transported ton an area hospital. He is currently listed in serious condition.

Two other drivers involved in the crash were transported to area hospitals, but had non-life-threatening injuries. Two other drivers were transported to area hospitals with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

According to Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump, all drivers were evaluated and blood samples were taken to be tested for signs any impairment.

Police said that they took one person into custody after they allegedly were attempting to steal tools from the scene immediately after the collision. Angel Munos, 41, was arrested on theft charges along with additional charges such as tampering with evidence and giving false information to law enforcement during an accident investigation.
