Couple Carries Injured Hiker Over 2 Miles to Safety

landscapeOur capacity to help others in a time of need is often cause for amazement. Such an incident happened recently on a New Year’s Day hike in Malibu, California, when a couple came across a man who had been injured. The two hiked some two and a half miles to carry the man to safety.

Dan Reardon and Dina Zaky were on a hike to Escondido Falls and had traveled a little over two miles when they came upon a group of people. Among those in the group was a man who had been injured.

Mark Martinez, had been injured after he rolled down a hill on his way down the trail.

Reardon, who serves as CEO of a United Kingdom-based fitness company, was once emergency doctor in the UK, asked if the group needed assistance in getting down. The group said they were fine but they were concerned about the hour and soon it would be dark.

Reardon offered to carry the injured man on his back. His companion, Dina Zaky ran ahead to the main road.

Since there was no cellphone reception in the area, Zaky ran to the first house that she came to, screaming and trying to get attention. She eventually found a phone and called police. By the time emergency crews arrived, however, Reardon had carried Martinez the entire distance back to the main road.

Hiker Mark Martinez had suffered a broken fibula and a broken ankle. Lucero Martinez, Mark’s wife, was able to take her husband to an area hospital where he was given a temporary cast.

Lucero Martinez says she is so grateful to Dan Reardon for his selfless assistance when her husband was hurt.
