A motorcycle trooper has been left injured after a collision on the westbound Interstate 10 at 43rd Avenue last week.
According to the Department of Public Safety, the trooper had been standing next to his motorcycle at the time of the accident that happened at approximately 6:45 a.m.
A DPS spokesperson said in a statement that the trooper was conducting a routine traffic stop and was filling out the paperwork when a maroon colored minivan drifted toward the stopped trooper and struck him and his motorcycle and then truck the silver car that the trooper had initially pulled over.
The trooper was thrown approximately 100 feet and suffered severe injuries to his legs as well as suffering a concussion, bruised lungs and bruised heart. The trooper is expected to recover.
Video footage reveals that the silver vehicle sustained rear-end damage while the maroon minivan sustained front-end damage and a broken windshield. The motorcycle can be seen lying alongside the Interstate highway.
According to officials, the trooper, whose name has not been released, was conscious, moving and alert after the accident. He was transported to an area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He is currently listed in stable condition after the accident.
Investigators say that because the trooper was wearing his helmet at the time of the accident, it probably saved his life.
It is believed that the trooper had been following all proper procedures during the stop by parking off the road to the right; his lights were on as he completed the paperwork. The driver of the minivan, whose name has also not yet been released, was believed to have been distracted or sleep deprived at the time of the accident.
So far, the crash is still under investigation. Impairment is not believed to have been a factor in the accident.
