Two drivers have been left dead and four children are critically injured after a head-on collision on Riggs Road in Sun Lakes.
Authorities say that at approximately 5:00 p.m., MCSO received a 911 call to report a very serious accident. One vehicle that was traveling eastbound on Riggs Road clipped another vehicle driving in the same direction, causing it to spin out of control. The out of control vehicle crossed the center lane and collided with another vehicle in oncoming traffic.
The westbound vehicle on Riggs Road was occupied by a female driver, Maria Santos, 33, and four young boys. All four children were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Santos, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. One of the boys, a 2-year-old, is still in critical condition. Three other boys, ages 6, 9 and 10, are all listed in stable condition.
The other accident victim is identified as Guy Gedeon, 60. Gedeon was the driver of the vehicle that crossed over, the center line and into Santos’ vehicle. Gedeon, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was also pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Investigators are still trying to determine whether or not alcohol or speed may have played a role in the fatal accident. Officials have indicated that it is too early in the investigation to determine whether the children had been wearing seat belts or were in proper child restraints.
Of course, in the case of a fatal accident, there is no amount of money that can ever compensate for the loss of a loved one. Even when those at fault are held responsible for their actions, the costs can mount up and leave surviving family members feeling overwhelmed.
